Success Is Rarely Achieved Alone

When we see a successful business owner, entrepreneur, or community leader, it is easy to focus on the person standing at the top. We see the finished product, the growing business, the recognition, or the achievement.

What we don’t always see are all the people who helped them get there.

Success is rarely achieved alone.

Behind many successful entrepreneurs is an entire team—sometimes a formal team and sometimes simply a collection of people who show up when they are needed.

It might be the marketing person who makes sure people know the business exists.

The content creator who finds the right words to tell the story.

The photographer who makes the business look its best.

The virtual assistant handling paperwork and keeping dozens of little tasks from falling through the cracks.

The bookkeeper making sure the numbers work.

It might be the Chamber president who keeps sending referrals, the mentor who answers the phone when you aren’t sure what to do next, or the fellow business owner who recommends you to someone else.

Sometimes your support team is actually your customers.

They are the clients who trusted you when your business was new, gave you an opportunity to prove yourself, left a wonderful review, shared your name with a friend, or came back again and again.

And then there are the teachers, mentors, family members, friends, colleagues, and community organizations that helped along the way.

None of this takes away from the hard work of the person whose name is on the business.

Entrepreneurs work incredibly hard. They take risks. They lose sleep. They make difficult decisions. They experience failures nobody sees and keep going anyway.

But being the person standing at the top doesn’t mean you climbed the entire mountain alone.

Someone may have helped clear the trail.

Someone taught you how to navigate it.

Someone handed you the right equipment.

Someone encouraged you when you wanted to turn around.

Someone may even have pointed out a better trail when the one you were taking led nowhere.

Remember the Hiking Shoes

I think success is a lot like standing on top of a mountain.

The photograph shows one person at the summit.

It doesn’t show the hiking shoes that carried them there.

It doesn’t show the person who cleared the trail, the teacher who taught them how to read the map, or the people who encouraged them along the way.

You may be standing on that mountain through your own sweat, determination, hard work, and tears—and you absolutely deserve to be proud of that accomplishment.

But most of us didn’t get there completely alone.

That’s why support teams deserve acknowledgment.

When someone succeeds, celebrate the person at the top of the mountain—but remember the people, opportunities, trust, referrals, lessons, and helping hands that made the climb possible.

And when you reach your own summit, turn around and thank the people who helped clear your path.

Better yet, reach down and help clear the path for the person climbing behind you.
